The Story
Halospace was founded in 2020 by Phillip Sitbon, amidst COVID lockdowns and social unrest, as a response to the growing need for community support and mutual aid enabled by technology.
At the time, Phillip was working at a Portland-based tech company, using their advanced resources in collaboration with the community to produce and distribute 3D-printed PPE (such as face shields) for frontline workers.
The experience of working with the community and seeing their struggles and successes inspired Phillip to start a non-profit, with a wide-ranging goal of creating space for the community to come together, share resources, and support each other. The hope was to provide a high-tech sort of maker space, in order to capture the benefits of community collaboration that Phillip had seen in action, and to provide education and access to technologies that are often out of reach for marginalized communities.
As social unrest in Portland continued to grow alongside the pandemic and a fledgling non-profit finding its footing, Halospace’s focus shifted towards more practical support with its media and mutual aid efforts, while still maintaining a strong commitment to making the most of technology for the good of the community. This proved to be a successful strategy, and the organization has since grown to include a diverse group of volunteers, all working together to make a difference in the world.
In 2022, Halospace finally acquired a physical space in Portland, Oregon, where it now operates as a community center and recording studio, offering a variety of programs and services to the public. The organization continues to grow and evolve, with a strong commitment to its mission and values, and a vision of a thriving, inclusive community where every individual has the opportunity for personal growth, creative expression, and transformative change.
